INTEL 441 - Intelligence in the Cold War (3 credits)

(Prereq: POLI 101  or permission of the instructor) For nearly half a century, the world was engulfed in what is often described as the most permeating political rivalry of modern times. Far from being simply a prolonged tactical standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union, the Cold War shaped the politics and ideology of an entire era. It also molded the institutional character and operational outlook of intelligence institutions in both East and West. This course traces the impact of the Cold War on contemporary aspects of intelligence, by exploring its role in some of the most critical flashpoints of the era and analyzing classic cases of international espionage that took place in the context of that tumultuous period.
