ARTS 313 - Painting the Portrait (3 credits)

(Prereq: ARTS 212 or permission of the instructor) Painting the portrait is an intermediate level painting course. Portrait painting is a genre that expresses essence in the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of the sitter. The challenge is to express the portrait making it relevant to contemporary art and life. Paint media selection for this course will be an individual choice. Knowledge of the chosen paint media is essential for successful portrait results. Technical and skill development include anatomical studies, proportions of the face and figure, color studies, observations of skull and plaster casts and compositional strategies through direct observation of the model.
