ENGL 404 - Topics in Non-Shakespearean Renaissance Literature (3 credits)

(Prereq: (1) ENGL 101, (2) ENGL 102 or ENGL 211, or any ENGL course at the 200 level or above) This course will focus on the study of Renaissance texts in various genres, with emphasis on non-Shakespearean literatures. Readings and themes will vary by semester, but our analysis will include: the construction and representation of high and low cultures of Renaissance literature; the relationship of the literature to the specific political, intellectual, and social environments within which it was produced; the relationship of gender and authorship; and the transhistorical and transcultural influences of Renaissance literature.
