HIST 363 - Black Atlantic & African Diaspora (3 credits)


In this course, students investigate the meanings of the Black Atlantic and the African Diaspora concepts generally studying the migrations of black people through the four Atlantic continents from the 17th century forward. Students explore several themes, such as: Slavery and the Laws in the Black Atlantic, Emancipation and Freedom, Transatlantic Voyagers, Black Cultural Unity, Resistance, and Citizenship. Primary sources are analyzed to investigate the continuity and change of themes over time, and to understand from a participant’s point of view.
