PHIL 370 - Medieval Philosophy (3 credits)

(Prereq: PHIL 101 and Sophomore standing or higher, or permission of the instructor) This course is a survey of Western philosophical thought during the Middle Ages, roughly from Late Antiquity to the Renaissance. Topics may include the question of the nature and existence of God, whether humans are free, the nature of time and whether the world is eternal, identity and difference, necessity and possibility, medieval logic, and skepticism about philosophical and scientific knowledge. Significant figures discussed may include Augustine, Boethius, Avicenna, Abelard, Anselm, Averroes, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and Ockham, as well as the classical background from Aristotle and Plato.
