ANTH 314 - Survey of African American Musics (3 credits) Music has been a crucial facet of the daily experiences of African Americans even before the advent of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Whether they were playing games, working on plantations, marching for civil rights, or engaging in religious worship, African Americans created and utilized music to facilitate the successful execution of these activities and many others. This course examines the factors that influence the creation and propagation of diverse styles (genres) of African American musics. Formal training in music is not required for this course. F, S, Su.
