Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Music at Coastal Carolina University is to inspire students through excellent musical education to be artistic, thoughtful, and responsible citizens who, in turn, inspire others. 

We believe that music is a vital and indispensable part of the human experience. Participation in musical experiences nurtures artistic and creative impulses common to all societies. We seek to cultivate and sustain a student-centered learning community rooted in superior professional and pedagogical training including diverse performance opportunities for all students. 

Our primary goal is to educate the next generation of music performers, makers and teachers. We also seek to provide superior performances and service for our local community, the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, and the university. We recruit and maintain an exceptional and diverse faculty, staff and student population in order to achieve departmental and institutional goals for undergraduate and graduate music programs. Our highest purpose is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, understanding, values and integrity that contribute to life-long learning and service in the arts, and active citizenship in a democratic society and interdependent world.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

1. Hear, identify and work conceptually with the major elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, and expressive qualities.
2. Sing in a musical and accurate manner. 
3. Demonstrate understanding of:

1. a wide selection of musical literature, principal eras, genres and cultural forces.
2. common elements and organizational patterns of music and their interactions. 
3. compositional processes, aesthetic properties of style, and ways these are shaped by artistic and cultural forces. 
4. musical form, processes and structures, as demonstrated in performance and through analytical, scholarly and pedagogical applications.

4. Apply musical judgments in analysis and performance. 
5. Demonstrate proficiency in one or more vocal or instrumental performance areas.
6. Sight-read at the keyboard with fluency demonstrating both general musicianship and an appropriate level of skill.

Entrance Requirements

Acceptance into the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree program requires a successful departmental audition. Requirements and procedures are available on the Department of Music website: https://www.coastal.edu/music/audition/.
