Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of English is to provide instruction and conduct research in writing, linguistics, and literature in order to promote better reading, writing, and cultural literacy among Coastal Carolina University students as well as the larger university community.

The Coastal Carolina University Department of English is a dynamic, student-centered learning environment made up of teachers, scholars, writers, and support staff who are dedicated to high quality teaching and engaged learning in the field of English studies.

To that end, we offer a B.A. in English with concentrations in 1.) composition, rhetoric, and linguistics, 2.) creative writing, 3.) literature and culture, and 4.) English studies. All of these concentrations help students acquire the advanced reading, writing, critical, and analytical skills necessary for professional careers or graduate programs. In our courses we mentor students in collaborative research and creative opportunities, as we impart the theoretical and historical backgrounds necessary for students to conduct research and creative projects on their own.

We also offer a B.A. in Digital Culture and Design that is designed to provide students with the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary study in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, with a focus on developing critical perspectives and practical skill sets in creating and utilizing digital media and content.

In pursuit of our mission, the department is committed to promoting faculty development in the tradition of the teacher-scholar model, thereby allowing for faculty research, creative activities, and expert collaborations that contribute to the body of knowledge in our field and to the more effective development of an active learning community
