Mission Statement

The Department of Visual Arts’ core values uphold the principle that art is a reflection of society. As visual artists, historians, and educators we are dedicated to building a diverse, equitable, and productive atmosphere that respects a culture of intellectual transformation through the education about and practice of visual communication. Our goal is to develop professional artists, designers, and art historians who are creative problem solvers, critical thinkers, and engaged, adaptable citizens.

Department Student Learning Outcomes

The Department of Visual Arts equally values the following educational outcomes.  We prepare our graduates to:

  1. Demonstrate fluency in visual communication and active knowledge relevant to one’s chosen discipline.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the influence of the visual arts on both historical and contemporary societies.

  3. Demonstrate intellectual and creative prowess through one’s chosen discipline.

  4. Develop and apply personal and analytical voice in response to visual culture.

  5. Demonstrate professionalism and personal accountability.

Foundations

The Department of Visual Arts challenges students through its foundations curriculum to explore the fundamental strategies and processes of art making. First-year students will be immersed in a series of courses that foster the acquisition of skills relative to two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, drawing, and digital processes. Students will develop and integrate conceptual approaches and problem-solving techniques, as well as contextualize their work in terms of contemporary art.
