Chinese is the most widely spoken language and the language with the longest continuous
written history in the world. In 2010, Chinese was named one of the languages considered
critical to U.S. national security by the U.S. Department of Education. A Chinese minor prepares students for domestic and overseas employment in international trade, education, law, and diplomacy; provides them with knowledge of a country that plays an increasingly important role in global economy and politics; and introduces them to an ancient civilization with traditions in literature, philosophy, religion, art and cuisine. Fulfilling the Chinese minor allows students to be more competitive in the global marketplace of the twenty-first century.

The Chinese minor is designed to train students to function successfully in Chinese culture using Mandarin Chinese as their primary language. It helps students develop proficiency in written and spoken Mandarin and a broad understanding of Chinese culture, society, and history.

The Chinese minor at Coastal Carolina University requires a minimum of 18 credit hours above the 115 level. The following courses are required.
