The Art Studio program promotes and encourages critical and visual innovation by immersing students in a diverse array of course offerings and studio specializations. Building upon the knowledge gained in our Foundations curriculum, students of this program will expand their knowledge base through the study of art historical and contemporary precedents, as well as the application of technical and conceptual skills in their creative practice. Following in the liberal arts tradition, art studio graduates will have the skills necessary to adapt and grow with our creative economy.
- SLO 1 Demonstrate visual fluency within the two-dimensional and three-dimensional realm.
- SLO 2 Demonstrate an understanding of art historical and contemporary practice within visual art.
- SLO 3 Demonstrate intellectual and creative prowess through one’s studio practice.
- SLO 4 Demonstrate readiness to enter the creative economy as working professionals.
A maximum of 52 credits may be applied toward satisfying the foundation courses and major requirements in art studio. Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in each course used to satisfy foundation courses and major requirements.

Art studio majors must present a juried exhibition and portfolio of their work at Coastal prior to graduation.
Cognate or Minor Requirements (12 Credits)
Cognate courses are courses drawn from outside the major but intended to support the major. Cognate courses must be upper level (300 or 400 level) and must be approved by the student’s adviser. Courses for cognate credit may be drawn from one or more departments. A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in all cognate or minor courses.
