The Asian Studies Minor is designed to augment students’ major field of study by equipping them with a wider perspective in Asian humanities, engaging them in explicit inter-Asian and Asian-non-Asian dialogues, and helping them acquire cross-cultural literacy. It aims to improve students’ competitiveness when pursuing advanced degrees or careers related to the history, politics, culture, and religious traditions of one or more Asian country. Fundamental to the Minor’s mission is cultivation of an academic autonomy that makes it possible to study Asia in ways not dependent on predominantly American or Eurocentric worldviews. This will enable students to assemble a versatile ‘intellectual toolbox’ for understanding both inter-Asian relations and those of Asia and the world. While pursuing their choice of major discipline, students will simultaneously learn about Asia through inter- and multi-disciplinary coursework, language training, study abroad, and internships.

II. Choose fifteen (15) credit hours among the following from at least three disciplines:

Total Credits Required: 18 Credits

Notes: All classes toward the minor must receive a ‘C’ grade or above. While the Asian Studies Minor does not have any foreign language requirements, students are strongly encouraged to acquire foreign language competency in an Asian language beyond 210-level. Students are also encouraged to complete a study abroad in Asia. Courses completed abroad may count as credits for the minor if relevant.

* Additional classes may count toward the minor when the content largely deals with Asia.

** This is an optional lab that is by permission of instructor only
