Certificate of Financial Planning

The Certificate of Financial Planning is a six-course program that will prepare students to become specialized in one of the fastest growing sectors in financial services. The curriculum equips students with a skill set for working in client-interaction and roles with banks, trust companies, insurance companies, and wealth management and financial planning firms.

Students will also learn to manage personal finances, provide financial advice to the public, and pursue industry demanded certifications.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Certificate of Financial Planning will enable students to gain and use knowledge and skills in the various aspects of a career as a CFP. Work as a Certified Financial Planner entails knowledge of income tax planning; risk management and insurance; as well as retirement and estate planning.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon receipt of the Certificate of Financial Planning, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret and apply tax law to client fact scenarios
  2. Understand the underlying legal and professional responsibilities of a tax professional
  3. Utilize the accepted methods of determining financial needs in retirement
  4. Learn the uses of wills and trusts in estate planning
  5. Define the basic concepts, classifications, and measurement of risk
  6. Identify the different forms of insurance
  7. Apply financial planning concepts and strategies to optimize a client’s financial situation
  8. Understand the CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility ADMISSION

Degree-seeking undergraduate students and non-degree seeking students at Coastal Carolina University are eligible for the certificate. Students must declare their intention to pursue the certificate with their academic advisor. Only students who have completed CBAD 201, CBAD 202, ECON 201, ECON 202, and MATH 132 (or their equivalent) may enroll in the program, as these are necessary prerequisites for the certificate courses.

 

Program Requirements and Policies


  • A minimum grade of ‘C’ in all courses applied to the certificate.
  • Transfer credit for FIN 301 or CBAD 363 may be counted toward the certificate.
  • Certificate courses may not be taken as pass/fail.
  • No substitute coursework for certificate courses will be allowed outside of FIN 301 or CBAD 363.

Total Credits Required: 18 Credits


Upon completion of the six certificate courses, the student will notify the internal certificate coordinator (designated faculty member located in the Department of Finance and Economics).
