The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education at Coastal Carolina University is designed to provide student with the knowledge, skills, and techniques essential for teaching mathematics at the secondary level. These students will obtain both a solid foundation in mathematical content and a broad understanding of how students learn mathematics.

This degree program is designed to attract students who wish to be excellent educators of mathematics at the high school level. These students get training in content, pedagogy, and knowledge that is needed to teach mathematics with digital technologies. The primary focus of this degree program is on secondary education (grades 9 - 12). The program is offered in tandem with the Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences and follows the degree completion requirements set by the South Carolina Department of Education and Spadoni College.

This degree program requires all students to take core courses, applied and theoretical mathematics and education courses that are designed to expose students to the content and methodological expertise necessary to become effective and skilled secondary educators.

Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in all major cognate courses, including MATH 160, Math 161, and STAT 201/201.

Student Learning Outcomes


Graduates of the Mathematics Education program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a sound conceptual understanding of the theoretical foundations of mathematics.
  2. Demonstrate analytical and quantitative competency in core subjects.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication of mathematics.
