The Graduate Certificate in Spanish for Healthcare and Social Services Professions is an online 12-credit hour program designed for working professionals in the healthcare and social services fields. Students will obtain language proficiency and critical cultural awareness that will assist them in servicing the needs of Spanish speaking patients and clients.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Spanish for Healthcare and Social
Services Professions program must meet the following criteria:
- Completion of an application form and payment of the application fee.
- Submission of an official undergraduate transcript from each post-secondary school or college previously attended, including any graduate study previously undertaken.
- Evidence of having received a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution in this country or its equivalent at a foreign institution.
- Applicants who are non-native speakers of English speakers must demonstrate proficiency in English by providing official results from tests taken within the last three years or through one of the other means explained in international graduate admission.

Student Learning Outcomes
After successfully earning the certificate, student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of issues specific to Spanish speaking patients and clients in the United States.
- Demonstrate a working conversational and written competency with medical Spanish.
- Demonstrate a working conversational and written competency with Spanish for social services environments.
- Demonstrate practical techniques for translating and interpreting English to Spanish and Spanish to English
Degree Requirements
To earn the graduate certificate, students must successfully complete the 12 credit hour program of study (plus prerequisites, if necessary) with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 *B) in the four required courses.
Prerequisites:
Students with no previous Spanish coursework at the undergraduate level may need to complete the two prerequisite courses listed below before embarking on the certificate’s 12 required credit hours. The program coordinator will determine which prerequisite course each student should be placed into. The program coordinator may waive the prerequisite requirement if, during an interview, a student can demonstrate competency in basic Spanish.
- SPAN 101: Basic Spanish for Healthcare and Social Services I – 3 credits or an
equivalent course as determined by the program coordinator. Students must earn a
grade of C or better.
• SPAN 102: Basic Spanish for Healthcare and Social Services II – 3 credits or an
equivalent course as determined by the program coordinator. Students must earn a
grade of C or better.
