  1. Choose one 100 or 200 level pre-modern history course from a rotation of current offerings
  2. Choose one 100 or 200 level modern history course from a rotation of current offerings
  3. Choose one 100 or 200 level U.S. history course from a rotation of current offerings

Choose one of the following options:


Option 1

  • Choose ten HIST 300 or 400 level courses (Courses must include at least two upper-level courses in United States, European, and World history.)
Option 2

Choose two concentrations:

One concentration must be an area concentration and one concentration must be a thematic concentration for a total of 30 credit hours. Courses must be selected in consultation with the student’s adviser.

Area Concentration:

Choose five 300 or 400 level courses from a rotation of current offerings from one of the following:

  1. European
  2. Global/Transregional
  3. United States
Thematic Concentration:

Choose five 300 or 400 level courses from a rotation of current offerings from one of the following:

  1. Atlantic World
  2. Sex, Gender, and the Body
  3. War & Society

Cognate Requirements (12 Credits)


Cognate courses are upper-level courses numbered 300 or 400 in disciplines other than the student’s major, but that support the major. Cognate courses should be chosen in consultation with the student’s academic adviser. Alternatively, history majors may choose a minor to replace the cognate requirement. Requirements for the minor are set by the minor department. The cognate requirement is subsumed by the minor.
