College of Business Administration

Vision

The vision of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration is to prepare all Wall College of Business students to maximize their potential for success with relevant, meaningful and practical curricula delivered by exceptional and dedicated faculty using cutting-edge applied pedagogy.

Mission Statement

The mission of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration is to guide and educate each student in the development of valuable skills for a successful career in a globally competitive and diverse environment.

With particular focus on four critical components in order to sustain and enact this mission, the Wall College of Business will:

  1. Educate STUDENTS in critical thinking, communication, and professionalism through applied and experiential learning using a variety of teaching techniques and innovative technologies.
  2. Develop, maintain, and execute a CURRICULUM emphasizing the integration of business functions in order to provide students with a complete and unified understanding of business.
  3. Develop FACULTY intellectual capital by creating a portfolio of diversified intellectual contributions in applied, basic/discovery, integrative/interdisciplinary, and pedagogical (teaching and learning) scholarship.
  4. Offer service to the larger COMMUNITY that utilizes and further enhances faculty expertise. Such efforts will, in turn, expand and enhance opportunities for students through cooperative research, internships, or improved course and curriculum design.

As members of the Wall College of Business community of teacher-scholars, we value:

  1. People. We value the people who work diligently to achieve (or to help us achieve) our common goals. We recognize that our success is dependent upon a team effort, and is built upon the tireless efforts of committed individuals working together. We treat all people with care, respect, and collegiality even when we disagree.
  2. Integrity. We value truthfulness, honesty, and transparency in all interactions.
  3. Excellence. We value diligence and quality in all of our efforts and strive to progress and advance continuously.
  4. Innovation. We value creativity, originality, flexibility, and adaptability in response to an evolving and ever-changing world while never failing to recognize and honor our history and the traditions upon which our college was built.
  5. Collaboration. We value synergy and commonality in our efforts to achieve a common goal. In such efforts, we commit to disregard self-interests in order to advance the college’s objectives.
  6. Diversity. We value individual differences and celebrate uniqueness, and we demonstrate this commitment by promoting a safe environment for expression of different perspectives.

The application of these values to our daily interactions means that we:

  • Ensure that everyone participates, and no one dominates.
  • Listen to others respectfully without interruption.
  • Are able to disagree without being rude or offensive toward another.
  • Recognize that all ideas have the potential to be of value, consequently, we refrain from quick judgement, and maintain objectivity and receptivity.

Building Your Business Portfolio Program

Program Overview

In 2012 the Wall College of Business instituted the Building Your Business Portfolio program. The goal of the program is for students to gain a heighted understanding of the majors and subsequent career options in business and to become more marketable post-graduation through acquiring additional business credentials, skills, knowledge, and practical experiences. The program is also designed to give students the opportunity to become more connected and engaged both on and off campus, to expand their professional network, and to gain an overall more fulfilling university experience. Successful completion of all components of the Building Your Business Portfolio program is a requirement for graduation within the Wall College of Business.

Program Requirements

In addition to completing the required coursework associated with each degree offered within the Wall College of Business, students are required to complete twelve (12) approved Professional Development Activities (PDAs), six of which must fall into the following categories: (1) Majors and Careers in Business, (2) Experiential Learning, (3) Leadership, (4) Building a Professional Profile, (5) Interviewing Skills, and (6) Transitioning to the Profession.

PDA Schedule

Each semester, the Wall Center for Excellence establishes a calendar of approved PDAs (and corresponding categories), which is made available on the Wall College of Business website: www.coastal.edu/business. These activities include professional development workshops that help students develop and improve specific skills, such as time management, personal finance, leadership, interpersonal management, delivering effective presentations, resume writing, and behavior-based interviewing techniques. A variety of additional activities may be offered including distinguished speakers, career panels, leadership programs, conferences, company visits, networking opportunities, and field experiences. PDAs may count for more than one PDA credit depending on the length and scope of the activity. While some of the PDAs are useful to all Wall College of Business students, other PDAs are targeted to students with more specific career interests. Consequently, outside of completing PDAs in the six required categories, students have the flexibility to select PDAs that are specific to their interests. Students may also request that alternative activities or events be counted as an approved PDA and/or counted toward the six required PDA categories by petitioning the Wall Center for Excellence showing relevance of the activity/event.

PDA Tracking and Recording

Completed PDAs will be posted to students’ program evaluations. It is ultimately each student’s responsibility to ensure the required number of Professional Development Activities (PDAs) is completed and that each of the six required PDA categories are fulfilled prior to graduation. The Wall Center for Excellence will track participation in PDAs; however, students must ensure that they bring their student ID to every PDA that they attend and sign attendance sheets with their correct information and/or swipe their student ID to receive credit. In some cases students may be required to complete a form or reflection to earn credit for an event. If a student’s record does not reflect participation in a specific PDA, the student must bring the matter to the attention of the Wall Center for Excellence by submitting an appeal by the end of the semester in which the activity in question took place.

FINAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR SATISFYING DEGREE REQUIREMENTS, AS OUTLINED IN THE UNIVERSITY CATALOG, RESTS WITH THE STUDENT.

Student Learning Outcomes

The Wall College of Business recognizes the importance of providing a high quality education for its majors. Further, we recognize that a part of our responsibility is to determine how successfully we have accomplished this. For our business majors, we have identified seven learning outcomes that are incorporated across the business curriculum, assessed to monitor the effectiveness of the curriculum in delivering these goals, and reviewed for continuous improvement.

To demonstrate competency as a Wall College of Business graduate, a student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competence in the core subjects of business administration: accounting, finance, management, marketing, economics, international issues, legal and social business issues, and quantitative analysis.
  2. Demonstrate competence in solving complex problems by identifying and analyzing an issue, gathering, analyzing, and interpreting relevant information and proposing solutions or evaluating impacts.
  3. Effectively express knowledge and ideas through written communication.
  4. Effectively express knowledge and ideas through oral presentation skills.
  5. Demonstrate use of appropriate technologies to make effective business decisions.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical perspectives in business via enhanced awareness and recognition of ethical issues and an understanding of the importance of ethical issues in business decisions.
  7. Work effectively as a team member in a business environment.

Double Major Requirement

Students may double major within the business disciplines. To complete a double major, students must satisfy the major requirements in both programs. A minimum of 15 discrete hours must be earned in each major. No courses common to both majors may be shared unless the student earns at least 15 additional discrete hours for and specific to each major.
