Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Music at Coastal Carolina University is to provide an outstanding music education for all students; quality performances for the community; and service to the university. We support an inclusive climate that values individual identities, commonalities and differences. We seek to cultivate and sustain a student-centered learning environment rooted in excellent professional and pedagogical training that includes a wide variety of performance opportunities for all students.
Our goal is to educate the next generation of music performers, creators and teachers. We strive to recruit and maintain an exceptional and diverse faculty, staff and student population in order to achieve the departmental and institutional goals for undergraduate and graduate music programs. Our highest purpose is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, understanding, values and integrity that contribute to life-long learning and service in the arts, and active citizenship in a democratic society and interdependent world.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- Perform. Demonstrate musical artistry through performance of technical proficiency and expressive stylistic interpretations within individual and collaborative contexts.
- Respond. Analyze and evaluate diverse musical works and performances (aurally, verbally, and visually) through historical, cultural, and stylistic contexts.
- Create. Integrate various skills such as musicianship, music technology, and historical knowledge to create and prepare compositions, arrangements, and improvisations.
- Connect. Promulgate, foster, and promote collaborations between music, fine arts, and disciplines outside the arts through respect and responsiveness within a variety of diverse cultures.
Entrance Requirements
Acceptance into the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree program requires a successful departmental audition. Requirements and procedures are available on the Department of Music website: https://www.coastal.edu/music/audition/.
