African and African Diaspora Studies Minor

Mission Statement

The interdisciplinary minor in African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) provides undergraduates with the learning environment and the tools to deepen their knowledge about the history, art and culture of people of African descent. From the local Gullah communities through the worldwide African diaspora to the African continent, this field of study seeks to provide a scholarly approach to understanding the lives of black people wherever they are located across the globe. Students in the minor will develop multifaceted analytical tools of inquiry for human engagement and informed citizenship; therefore, the minor complements almost every major. The minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework drawn from at least three disciplines and up to six disciplines.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will analyze historical trajectories of the African people and paths that have led to the dispersal of people of African descent across the globe.
  • Students will examine socio-cultural systems that define and guide the understanding(s) of Africans and people of African descent.
  • Students explore different disciplinary approaches to the study of Africa as aregion and the spread of people of African descent.

Program Requirements (18 Credits)


  • Students must complete all required courses for the minor with a grade of ‘C’ or better.
  • One course must be completed for Section I, 3 courses for Section II, and two courses for Section II
