Dance Minor

The minor in dance at CCU is housed within the Department of Theatre and is dedicated to providing a historical and practical foundation for our students’ creative work in the area of dance. The program is designed to balance performative and theoretical aspects of dance, encouraging students to participate in the creation of original dances, develop technical skills that deepen scholarly appreciation of dance, and articulate visual and physical concepts with the ability to write and speak clearly about dance. Students will also develop an ability to see their work within the context of the larger dance profession - and then in relation to general art aesthetics. Courses within the minor offer intensive study in dance technique, history, physical anatomy/kinesiology, and choreography.

In order to select courses that meet the program requirements, students pursuing the minor must consult with their major advisor and with Alison Levenberg, Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Theatre. A dance placement audition and short interview must be completed in order to be considered for the minor in dance, as well as for placement in upper level dance courses. An online application is required in order to audition.  Please contact Alison Levenberg at alevenber@coastal.edu or Steven Higginbotham, Chair of the Department of Theatre, at shigginbo@coastal.edu with questions or for additional information.

A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in each course to be applied toward the minor.
