The B.A. in History helps students to develop multifaceted research skills; learn how to use critical analysis to understand individuals and societies; synthesize large quantities of information and make this accessible in clear writing and oral presentation. By studying history, you will have the chance to pursue many different careers in countless professions and industries. The history program has energetic and dynamic faculty who apply their research in the classroom, active student organizations, and a lively community with strong, close bonds between faculty and students.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  4. Demonstrate awareness of cultural fluency and diversity.
  5. Conduct critical historical analysis.

Degree Requirements (120 Credits)


Students majoring in History must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in all History courses

Only in rare and extenuating circumstances may a History major request to substitute a maximum of six hours of courses with a non-HIST prefix in place of courses with a HIST prefix, which will only be allowed after the appropriate approval processes.

Cognate Requirements (12 Credits)


Cognate courses are upper-level courses numbered 300 or 400 in disciplines other than the student’s major, but that support the major. Upper-level courses taken while enrolled in a CCU approved study abroad program may also count toward the cognate requirement. Cognate courses should be chosen in consultation with the student’s academic adviser. Alternatively, history majors may choose a minor to replace the cognate requirement. Requirements for the minor are set by the minor department. The cognate requirement is subsumed by the minor.
