HIST 117 History of Sports and Society - 3 credits


This course introduces students to the historical relationships between sports and politics, economics, society, religion, and culture. Taking a global perspective, this class uses a wide variety of case studies, ranging from the ancient games to modern sports, to examine the construction and maintenance of group identity on the field of competition, illustrating how social constructs, such as race, empire, gender, nation, and class, have been both upheld and challenged within the context of sports.
