Cultural Heritage Studies Certificate

The certificate in Cultural Heritage Studies prepares undergraduate students to understand, interpret, and promote a broad range of artifacts, texts, buildings, landscapes, and behaviors of cultures around the world. The 12-13 credit certificate program includes courses across multiple disciplines that introduce students to cultural heritage legislation and management, museum studies and collections management, and ethics and current issues facing museums and cultural sites. Students train in heritage interpretation and outreach, promoting community engagement in the process. This program complements a wide range of majors and supports career paths in public history, digital humanities, museum education and administration, cultural resource management, and heritage tourism. Student Learning Outcomes- Demonstrate competency in core concepts and methods, and their applications in cultural heritage research.
- Demonstrate knowledge of current issues and legislation related to museums and cultural sites.

Program Requirements (12-13 Credits)
Foundation (3 credits)
Complete the following course: Electives (9-10 Credits)
Choose one course from Group A and two courses from Group B. No more than 7 credit hours may come from the same discipline. Group A: Develop Contextual Knowledge of Cultural Heritage
Below is a list of courses that meet the requirements for Group A. Students must complete one course from this list. Please see the certificate coordinator to ask if a course you have taken, or plan to take, can be included. Notes:
Although not listed above, IDS 190 (Interdisciplinary Approaches to Humanistic Thought); IDS 302 (Special Topics in Interdisciplinary Studies); HONR 302 (Special Topics in Cultural Studies); and HONR 320 (Special Topics in Honors) may count towards the certificate program, depending on the topic. Requires the approval of the certificate coordinator. Group B: Develop Skills in Cultural Heritage Studies
Below is a list of courses that meet the requirements for Group B. Students must complete two courses from this list. Please see the certificate coordinator to ask if a course you have taken, or plan to take, can be included. Up to 4 credit hours of an internship or field school may count towards the Group B requirements. Note, however, that an internship must be in relevant cultural heritage field and must be approved by the certificate coordinator. Notes:
To fulfill certificate electives, students may take either: - ARTH 430 –OR– IDS 430, not both.
- ARTH 450 –OR– GEOG 450, not both.
- ARTH 452 –OR– GEOG 452, not both.
- ANTH 381 –OR– HIST 392, not both.
CHS Portfolio
Before applying for graduation, students are required to submit to the certificate coordinator a portfolio of work (final papers and/or projects) from two of the elective certificate courses, along with an up-to-date resume that includes/addresses skills aquired through certificate coursework. Total Credits Required: 12-13
