Mission Statement
The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies educates students to be global citizens by offering coursework, co-curricular programs, and study abroad opportunities that allow students to acquire proficiency in languages other than English and critical awareness of the cultures associated with these languages. Learning another language facilitates one’s ability to take the perspective of others who perceive and describe the world using a different linguistic and cultural frame of reference. By promoting such perspective-taking, the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies fosters respect for cultural and intellectual diversity and nurtures students’ desire and ability to promote productive communication between individuals and nations.
Student Learning Outcomes
Graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate language skills at or above the intermediate high level of proficiency consistent with the ACTFL guidelines on proficiency in a foreign language.
- Demonstrate an understanding of target cultures and perspectives in a global context and to think critically about issues related to these cultures.

Degree Requirements (120 Credits)
Foundation Courses (9-18 Credits) *
Complete the following courses:

Major Requirements (27 Credits)
Students select a first and second language
Complete the following courses:
- 200 level courses in the first language (6 credits)
- 300 level courses in the first language (6 credits)
- 400 level course in the first language (3 credits)
- 480 or 499 course in the first language (3 credits)
- 200 level courses in the second language (3 credits)
- Additional 200 level course in the second language or an additional 300-400 level course in the first language (3 credits)
- 300 level course in the second language or an additional 300-400 level course in the first language (3 credits)
Cognate Requirements (12 Credits)
Students will be advised to choose cognates that support their chosen concentration (12 credits at 300 or 400 level). If students choose to double major or declare a minor, the cognate requirement will be waived.
Electives (16-33 Credits)
Total Credits Required: 120
Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in all foundation and major requirement courses.
