Applied Archaeology Certificate

The Certificate in Applied Archaeology is designed to provide students with hands-on training in archaeological methods. This training prepares students for employment as archaeological field and laboratory technicians in the cultural resource management industry, which provides public and private agencies with compliance for regulations governing the treatment of archaeological sites and historic resources. As a supplement to a range of majors and minors, the Applied Archaeology Certificate requires 13 credit hours of training and provides the minimum employment qualifications for jobs in the discipline.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the requirements for the Applied Archaeology Certificate will be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the core anthropology and archaeology knowledge underpinning applied archaeological methods and techniques.
  2. Demonstrate development of archaeological field work skill sets through the successful completion of an archaeological field school experience.
  3. Demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of appropriate laboratory methods, and hands-on skill sets to the cataloguing, handling, processing, and analysis of artifacts and/or other cultural materials.
  4. Demonstrate ability to apply hands-on digital heritage and geospatial technologies methods and skill sets to develop an original project that visualizes, analyzes and represents cultural knowledge.
