European Studies Minor

This interdisciplinary minor allows students to develop a regional area specialization that emphasizes knowledge of European language, history, society, culture, and politics. The minor affords students the opportunity for greater focus on Europe, while familiarizing them with multiple disciplinary approaches to the study of the region. This minor enhances student preparation for careers in government service, business, international organizations, teaching, and a wide range of other professions.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students apply foreign language skills in culturally appropriate contexts.
- Students analyze historical trajectories that have led to current European political, social, and cultural practices and structures.
- Students examine aspects of European political systems in comparative perspective.
- Students explore different disciplinary approaches to the study of Europe as a region.

I. Language
Students must complete one of the following options (which also fulfill a Core requirement): Take five credit hours of foreign language at the 115 level in French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Or Take six credit hours of foreign language at the 110 and 120 level in French, German, Italian, or Spanish. II. Foundation
Complete one of the following courses (3 credits). The course taken to fulfill this requirement cannot be used to complete the minor elective requirement (Section III). III. Electives
Below is a list of pre-approved elective courses. Students must complete 5 courses (15 credit hours) from this list, noting that only 6 credit hours may come from a single discipline. Please see the minor coordinator to ask if a course you have taken, or plan to take, can be included. Notes
Up to 9 credit hours in this minor may count towards another minor program, major program, and/or Core requirements. Students may apply up to 12 credit hours from study abroad programs, intensive summer language study programs, or appropriate internships to the minor. All external programs and internships must be approved in advance by the coordinator of the minor. Students must complete all required and elective courses for the minor with a grade of ‘C’ or better. Total Credits Required: 18–24 Credits
