Higher Education and Community Engagement (B.A.)

This major is grounded in interdisciplinary foundational concepts with an emphasis on leadership in higher education and community contexts. This major will support students who want to work in non-traditional educational settings. These settings include colleges and universities, as well as other agencies that serve to engage the community in various ways through educational programs. Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in all required program courses and major requirements. Students should plan carefully with their advisors since some courses are offered in the core and others have prerequisites and are limited to specific semesters.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the requirements for a degree in higher education community engagement will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of foundational concepts related to education in society.
  2. Demonstrate leadership in a community or higher education setting.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the diverse nature and needs of communities.
  4. Collaborate with various stakeholders in a community or higher education setting.
  5. Design, assess, and evaluate community education programs and student engagement programs within higher education

  • Courses focusing on work in Higher Education, such as UNIV 300, UNIV 301,UNIV 303, or RSM 310
  • Courses focusing on Sustainability, such as SUST 302, POLI 421Q or UNIV 315
  • Courses focusing on Education, such as EDUC 111, EDUC 215, EDUC 204
  • Recommended Minor: Human Services
