The Data Analytics for Intelligence and Security minor is designed to give students a foundation in methodological skills broadly applicable a variety of settings, including in government agencies, research organizations, and the private sector. The DAIS minor focuses on research design, quantitative research skills, and on techniques to visualize data for advanced analysis or for communication to non–technical audiences. This minor is rooted in analytic techniques used in the fields of intelligence research and security studies, but takes a multidisciplinary approach, encouraging students to engage with methodological skills, technologies, and coursework from a variety of academic disciplines.
Student Learning Objectives
This minor provides students will the knowledge and skills to design research projects informed by the scientific method, conduct research using quantitative techniques, visualize data, and communicate analytic findings to diverse audiences. Upon successful completion of the DAIS minor, students can:
- Construct a research project using the scientific method
- Select appropriate analytical techniques needed in a research project
- Perform basic data science tasks such as data wrangling, data description, and regression analysis
- Demonstrate proficiency in multiple research skillsets relevant to the fields of intelligence analysis and security studies
- Visualize data, including the production of graphs and network charts
- Communicate analytic findings coherently to both researchers and decision-makers
